The mint laban I grew up on — the Kuwaiti drink that lives in every fridge, buttermilk blended with ice, salt and a handful of mint until it's cold, creamy and just a little green. Here's exactly how we make it, in three minutes.
Ingredients
-
2 cups (480 ml) buttermilk (laban)
-
¼ cup (60 ml) cold water
-
1 cup ice
-
½ tsp salt, or to taste
-
A handful of fresh mint leaves (or 1–2 tsp dried mint if fresh isn't around)
-
To garnish: a sprig of fresh mint and a dusting of dried mint
Directions
Add the buttermilk, water, ice, salt, and mint to a blender.
Blend until smooth, creamy, and a little frothy — thick, almost like a smoothie, with a soft green tint.
Taste and add a little more salt if needed.
Pour into tall glasses, top with fresh and dried mint, and drink cold.
Recipe Note
Recipe Tips:
No fresh mint? Dried mint alone works beautifully.
For a lighter drink add a splash more water; for thicker, hold it back.
Traditionally served alongside spiced rice like Machboos.
